What can landscape architects do for a project?
Some of the greatest outdoor spaces are designed by landscape architects, just as great buildings are designed by building architects. The landscape architect must know the space requirements of each outdoor use element and how to relate the uses one to another and to the unique existing features of the site they will occupy.
All this is accomplished while being mindful of the principles of sustainable development. This includes minimizing increases in storm water runoff, the degradation of runoff water quality, soil erosion and sedimentation, spillover lighting, and excessive supplemental water requirements.
Typical projects involve artistic arrangement of all the site elements, including vehicle access drives, pedestrian paths and patio pavements, shade structures and pools and the grading of land to direct storm water runoff.
Planting design is an aspect that introduces a fourth dimension into the equation. Plants are living elements which change size and shape over time, at a somewhat predictable rate. Landscape architects must select the appropriate plant varieties, balancing immediate impact with long term space requirements of plants. Plantings are used to control the view, provide the right amount of shade and add color and interest to the site.
The ultimate test of how well the landscape architect has done his job is in answering the question, does the design fit the site and create a safe, comfortable and inviting environment? Are materials and methods of construction going to result in lasting improvements, that will stand the test of time?
